Birds are one of the most diverse and fascinating species on the planet. With an estimated 10,000 species of birds in the world, it’s no surprise that some of them have unique features that set them apart from other creatures. From vibrant colours to peculiar shapes and sizes, these five bird species are sure to make you do a double take! Let’s explore some of these incredible birds and just how they got their unique traits. 

Violet-Backed Starling 

This starling is a small passerine bird native to Africa, with a stunning violet-backed plumage. Its wings are black with white spots and its tail is blue-gravy with white tips. The Violet-backed Starling has an iridescent sheen that makes it stand out amongst other birds in its area! This shiny coating is created by light reflecting off the tiny air pockets in the feathers, giving it an almost metallic hue. 

Long-Wattled Umbrella Bird 

The Long-wattled Umbrella Bird is found in Central and South America’s tropical rainforests. It can grow up to 18 inches long and has some interesting features. It has a very long wattle (the flap of skin on its neck) that can be as long as six inches! As if this wasn’t strange enough, when threatened or excited, the male will inflate his throat pouch like a balloon before singing his song! This unique behavior makes him one of the most noticeable birds in the rainforest canopy. 

Golden Pheasant 

The Golden Pheasant is found in forests across China but is also popular among pet owners due to its bright colors and distinctive “crown” feathers on its head. This gorgeous bird has an orange body with yellow breast feathers and black stripes along its back. Its vibrant crown consists of yellow feathers with red highlights at their tips, making this bird easily recognizable among others! 
                                                                                     

Ruffled Grouse

The Ruffled Grouse is native to North America and can be seen in deciduous forests throughout Canada and parts of the United States. These ground-dwelling birds have unique plumage which includes flecks of brown, grey, white and black along their backs as well as distinctive ruffed feathers along their heads! Their wings also feature colourful patches of light greenish-yellow which can easily be spotted when they take flight!

White Bellied Go Away Bird

The White Bellied Go Away Bird may not be one you’ve heard of before – but once you see it you won’t forget it anytime soon! Found only in sub-Saharan Africa, this medium sized bird stands out from all others due to its unique coloration – primarily white feathers along its belly with striking black stripes on its wings and head. But what really sets this bird apart from others is its call – instead of chirping or tweeting like most other birds, this one has a loud “go away!” call that can be heard far off in the distance!
