5 signs your cat is unwell

No one knows your cat better than you do. You know their quirks, their personalities, and what makes them happy or unhappy. So, if something seems off, it’s important to trust your gut and get them to the vet as soon as possible. Here are 5 signs that your cat may be unwell.

  1. Their Appetite Has Decreased

If your normally voracious furry friend has lost their appetite, it’s a cause for concern. While a decrease in appetite can be caused by stress or changes in the household (such as a new baby), it can also be a sign of something more serious, such as an infection or kidney disease. If your cat isn’t eating or drinking for more than 24 hours, it’s time to take them to the vet.

  1. They Are Vomiting or have diarrhoea

While an occasional bout of vomiting or diarrhoea is not cause for alarm, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration—which can be dangerous, especially for kittens and elderly cats. If your cat is vomiting or has diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, contact your vet.

  1. They’re Sneezing or coughing

Similar to humans, cats can catch colds—but they can also develop other respiratory illnesses, such as asthma or bronchitis. If your cat is sneezing or coughing frequently, it’s time to make an appointment with the vet.

  1. They Have cuts, Sores, or are Itching Frequently

If you notice any sores, cuts, or excessive itching on your cat’s skin, they may have fleas, mites, or other types of parasites. These parasitic infections are not only uncomfortable for your cat but can also lead to secondary infections—so it’s important to get them treated as soon as possible.

  1. They’re Acting lethargic

If your cat is suddenly sleeping more than usual or seems listless and lacking energy, it could be a sign of an underlying health condition—such as anaemia, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or even heart disease. A visit to the vet is warranted to rule out any serious health concerns.

While Cats are known for being independent creatures, that doesn’t mean they don’t need our help from time to time—especially when it comes to their health. As pet parents, it’s our responsibility to keep an eye out for any changes in our feline friend’s behaviour that could indicate they’re unwell so we can get them the treatment they need as quickly as possible.
