How to Ensure Your Pet Bird Is Getting the Proper Nutrition

As a pet bird owner, it’s important to ensure your feathered friend is getting all the nutrients they need. While birds can survive on a diet of seeds and pellets, there are other foods that can provide essential vitamins and minerals needed for good health. Let’s take a look at the top 10 nutrients your pet bird needs, and how to incorporate them into their daily diet.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for pet birds as it helps support their vision and strengthens their immune systems. Some great sources of vitamin A include dark, leafy greens such as kale and spinach, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, papaya, mangoes, cantaloupe, squash and apricots. All fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly before feeding them to your bird.

Vitamin B Complex

The B complex vitamins are also necessary for optimal health in birds. These vitamins help with metabolism and nervous system function and can be found in lean proteins such as lean chicken or fish (no bones), eggs or tofu. Other sources include legumes like beans or lentils, whole grains like quinoa or oatmeal and nuts like almonds or peanuts (unsalted).

Calcium

Calcium is critical for strong bones in birds, so make sure your pet has plenty of calcium-rich foods in its diet! Some excellent sources are cooked eggshells (make sure they’re fully cooked first), dairy products like yogurt or cheese (low fat varieties are best), leafy greens such as kale or collard greens and fortified cereals like Cheerios®. Almonds are also high in calcium but should only be given occasionally due to their high fat content.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for healthy skin and feathers in birds. Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include flaxseed oil (which can be added to food as well as used topically on the skin) fish oil capsules (purchased from the store) insect larvae such as mealworms; cooked eggs; sunflower seeds; walnuts; pumpkin seeds; chia seeds; hemp seeds; salmon; anchovies; sardines; mackerel; tuna and trout.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in maintaining a bird’s overall health – it helps with wound healing, supports immunity against infections and boosts energy levels. Some great sources of vitamin C include oranges or orange juice (100% pure juice only); kiwi fruit; strawberries; peppers (red bell peppers have the most vitamin C); broccoli; Brussels sprouts ; kale ; cauliflower ; tomatoes ; papaya ; pineapple ; melons ; guava ; watermelon .
