What is My Bird Trying to Tell Me?

We may never know what our feathered friends are thinking, but we can understand a lot from the behaviours they exhibit. Birds display a range of behaviours that can be confusing for new bird owners. But with some knowledge, you will be able to identify and understand why your pet is behaving the way it does. Let’s dive in and explore common bird behaviours!

Nesting Instincts

If your bird has started gathering bits of paper or feathers and stuffing them into corners, it might mean it’s time to breed! Some birds actually build nests out of whatever materials they have nearby. In the wild, they would use twigs and grasses; at home, they’ll use paper or feathers instead. It’s important to remove nesting material as soon as possible if your pet isn’t planning on breeding. Otherwise, the nesting instinct could turn into an obsessive behaviour that might not be good for your bird’s mental health.

Preening

Preening is a very common activity among birds in which they clean their feathers by picking at them with their beak and then wiping away dirt and debris with their tongue. This helps keep their feathers in top condition for flight and insulation. Preening also involves oiling their feathers with secretions from their preen gland located near the base of their tail. A healthy bird should preen itself several times per day, so if you notice a decrease in preening activity this could indicate something is wrong with your pet’s health.

Vocalisations

Many people think of parrots when talking about vocalizations because they are one of the most talkative species of birds around! But other types of birds also make noises to communicate with each other—from warblers singing sweet morning melodies to owls hooting through the night. Different vocalizations can also indicate different emotions or behavioural states; for example, many birds will chirp louder when excited or feeling threatened by something nearby. By understanding these vocalizations better, you can get a better idea of what your pet is trying to tell you!

With some knowledge about common bird behaviours, you can begin to understand what your feathered friend may be trying to tell you! From nesting instincts to preening activities and vocalizations, there are plenty of clues that provide insight into our birds’ thoughts and feelings. As long as you take time to observe your pet’s behaviour closely, you will soon become well-versed in deciphering its language!
