Five Tips for Petting Your Bird

Pet birds can bring a lot of joy and companionship to your home, but they also require special care. As with any pet, it’s important to learn how to properly interact with them. If you’re new to bird ownership or just want some tips on how to better pet your feathered friend, read on for five top bird petting tips every pet owner should know.

  1. Use the Right Hand

Some birds can be skittish around hands and prefer one over the other. To figure out which is best for your bird, gently approach them with both hands (palms up) and observe their reaction. If your bird hesitates when you use one hand, try using the other instead.

  1. Start Slow

When first introducing yourself to a new bird, it’s best to start slow. Using gentle strokes and kind words will help build a trusting relationship between you and your pet over time. Once they get used to being touched by you, you can gradually increase their contact time until they are comfortable enough for full-body petting sessions.

  1. Focus on Calming Areas

Certain areas of a bird’s body are more sensitive than others and may cause them stress or discomfort if touched too much or in an inappropriate manner. Focusing on calming areas like the head or wings instead of potentially sensitive ones like the tail will help keep them calm and relaxed during bonding time with you.

  1. Offer Treats as Rewards

Rewarding your bird for positive behaviour is a great way to show them that good things happen when they respond positively to being handled by humans. Offering treats such as fruits or vegetables after each successful session will let them know that human interaction can be pleasant and enjoyable!

  1. Be Patient & Consistent

It takes patience and practice to develop trust between you and your feathered friend, so don’t be discouraged if progress is slow at first! Being consistent with your interactions—petting your bird once or twice a day—will help build their familiarity with you over time and make future sessions less stressful for both of you!
