Watch Out for These 7 Poisonous Foods For Your Dog

We all want to show our furry friends how much we love them by showering them with treats and snacks. But did you know that many of the foods that we humans enjoy can be toxic, even deadly, to our beloved pups? Keep reading to find out which seven surprising foods are poisonous to dogs.

  1. Chocolate

Chocolate may be a favourite treat of many people, but it can be extremely dangerous for dogs. All forms of chocolate contain a compound called theobromine, which can cause an array of symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, elevated heart rate, and in some cases seizure or death.

  1. Macadamia Nuts

While macadamia nuts are not necessarily toxic to dogs, they can cause significant gastrointestinal upset and neurologic symptoms like lethargy and weakness in the hind legs. If ingested in large amounts they can also cause muscle tremors and fever.

  1. Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins are highly toxic to dogs as they can damage their kidneys leading to potential failure. Vomiting and/or diarrhoea is usually the first sign of trouble followed by lethargy or decreased appetite if eaten in larger amounts.

  1. Avocado

Avocados contain persin (a fungicidal toxin) which is especially harmful for puppies but can also cause an upset stomach for older dogs if ingested in large amounts. The flesh of avocados is generally safe for most adult dogs but should still be avoided as it’s high in fat content which could lead to pancreatitis if consumed too often or in excessive amounts.

  1. Caffeine

Caffeine is commonly found in energy drinks, coffee grounds/beans, tea leaves/bags, chocolate covered espresso beans, or pre-workout supplements – all of which should not be given to your dog due to its stimulatory effects on the central nervous system that can lead to rapid heart rate, restlessness, panting/drooling, vomiting/diarrhoea, seizures or even death if ingested in large enough quantities.

  1. Garlic & Onions

Garlic and onions both contain compounds that are highly toxic for your pup as they damage red blood cells leading to anaemia (low red blood cell count). Symptoms include pale gums / tongue , vomiting , abdominal pain , increased heart rate & breathing , weakness or collapse .

 7 . Xylitol

Xylitol is a common sugar substitute used in many products such as gum , candy , baked goods & toothpaste . It is extremely toxic as it causes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar ) within 10-15 minutes after ingestion & liver failure with long term exposure . Other signs include vomiting , tremors , loss of coordination & seizures .

It’s important for pet owners everywhere to pay close attention when feeding their dogs snacks from human food so that any hazardous ingredients do not make their way into Fido’s bowl . Make sure you avoid these 7 surprising foods that are poisonous to dogs at all costs ! That way , you’ll ensure your pup stays healthy and happy for years to come !
